Bridgeport Rescue Mission by Ed Hill, Fairfield CT

Since last fall, I participated as an active member of the "Leadership for Greater Bridgeport". As part of this leadership team I attended a program consisting of 10 daylong workshops where participants were made acutely aware of community issues and challenges through face-to-face discussions and interactions with community leaders. Many of these workshops occurred at locations related to the topic. The topics ranged from information on human services, the economy, demographics, local and state government, public safety and justice, health care, education, the arts, the media, transportation, housing and much more. Additionally and separate from the day-long learning workshops all participants broke up into separate teams. Each team selected a community problem to which we were to develop and implement a solution.

I formed a team, and with seven others raised funds, renovated a room in disrepair, collected the necessary equipment, furniture, resources, and assembled a computer learning center for homeless women with children at the Bridgeport Rescue Mission. Our goal was to "Create a Computer Learning Center" which would help homeless women gain access to the tools and resources (computer skills, resume writing, career research, family support, etc.) they need in order to help them move from the shelter to being independent with a job.

The completed project consisted of six computer learning stations, printer, room décor, Microsoft Office training manuals, office supplies, a children's learning area (in the same room so that mothers could watch their children while they learned), and donations of over $1,500 cash for continued support of the learning center long into the future. We all felt that this was a small step toward helping those in our local community who are less fortunate than us and need a little help to get back on their feet. For me personally, I leave this program and project with a feeling that we all live in a great community, but we can all give a little bit. The mothers and children's glowing smiles and the incredible gratitude expressed by the Bridgeport Rescue Mission was humbling.
