“Freezin’ for a Reason” 2013 by Jim Gildea, Fairfield CT

j_Gildea_plungeMarch 23, 2013 was a special but yet interesting day for me. On this day, I was one of more than 100 people who jumped into Long Island Sound at Fairfield's Jennings Beach. It was for a great reason as I helped raise funds for the Wakeman Boys & Girls Club and the Smilow-Burroughs Clubhouse located on Fairfield Avenue in the West End of Bridgeport Connecticut. The Boys Club has always been a special place for me. When I was growing up I spent a lot of time at a Boys Club and it provided me a safe, fun place to spend my days. Now as an adult I am serving on the Unit Board for Wakeman Boys & Girls Club at the Smilow-Burroughs Clubhouse. It is a great place filled with great kids that until the Clubhouse opened had very few good choices to consider during their free time after school, at night and on weekends. With the new Clubhouse open now more than 1,200 kids in a year and a half have been involved and there are more coming each week.

My family and friends thought I was crazy........they tell me that the water temperature was about 36 degrees....so I didn't stay in long. As a first time plunger, I didn't know what to expect or wasn't sure what to do....so I just closed my eyes and dove in headfirst. It was a great day for a great purpose. I hope it's my first of many!!!
