Bigelow Tea 2013 Book Drive by Pat Sorgenti

Recently, Bigelow conducted a book drive to benefit New Beginnings Family Academy, a charter school, in Bridgeport, Connecticut. The book drive allowed Bigelow employees to clean out their bookshelves and recycle the beloved books of their children that weren't being read anymore.

More importantly, the books will have new life on the shelves of the Academy's school store where they will be redeemed by the students with their "STRETCH bucks". At New Beginnings, students are encouraged to engage in behaviors in alignment with our S.T.R.E.T.C.H. principles - Strategic, Thoughtful, Respectful, Empathetic, Trustworthy, Consistent and Hard Working. When a staff member recognizes a student who is acting on one of these principles, the student can receive a STRETCH buck. Bucks can be redeemed at the school store once a week for such items as books, games or healthy snacks.

Quentin Ball, Development Director, of the school stated that the children love to read so much, that the book shelves are always depleted. What a great problem to have!

When we started the book drive, I had no idea how many books we would collect.

I am thrilled to share that we collected over 350 books! Hopefully, they will help keep the shelves filled and the students reading well into the new school year.
