Charleston Tea Plantation
America's Only Tea Garden

The 2008 growing season has come to an end at Charleston Tea Plantation. The tea plants are shutting down for the winter and the look of Fall is taking over the farm. Millions of tea blossoms are appearing on the plants throughout the fields. Soon to follow will be the annual visit of tens of thousands of butterflies as they fuel-up off the tea blossoms for the final leg of their migration to winter resting grounds in Florida. Our “Green Giant” harvester has been very busy all summer long. For the fourth consecutive year the tea plants have out produced the previous year. That’s great news for American Classic Tea lovers throughout the land!

American Classic Green Tea is here!

The 2008 harvest season has seen the introduction of five brand new American Classic items.
For the three seasons that Charleston Tea Plantation has been open to the public the number one question asked by visitors has always been “Do you make green tea?” Behind the scenes Bill Hall—our partner and world renowned 3rd generation tea taster—has been working on a green tea recipe that would pass his critical standards for a couple growing seasons.

We are pleased to announce that the wait is over! In July American Classic ‘Island Green’ Tea was introduced in the Plantation’s Gift Shoppe and immediately became the number one selling item in the entire Shoppe. Demand far exceeded the supply of this delicate and delicious tea. Through some innovative changes in the factory process Bill and Stephen Fernandez—our Tea Maker—were able to substantially increase production as the growing season wound to a close. We are proud to offer for the first time on the web our own American Classic Green Tea. Please see the Special Web Offers (Call 1-843-559-0383 to place your order) at the bottom of the page and enjoy the unique and refreshing taste of Island Green.

Also new for this season are four additional American Classic Tea Pyramid tea bag items. The introduction of large cut leaf American Classic Tea in a pyramid tea bag in April created a whole new experience for enjoying fresh tea from Charleston Tea Plantation. Based on the combined success of the America’s own tea in a pyramid bag and the four flavored American Classic Loose Teas you can now experience the same taste sensation of these flavored teas in the innovative and convenient pyramid tea bag. American Classic Tea, Charleston Breakfast, Governor Gray, Plantation Peach and Rockville Raspberry pyramid tea bags are for sale. See the new Buy 5 boxes, Get 1 Free web offer at the bottom of the page (Call 1-843-559-0383 to place your order).

This winter . . .

There’s much work to do as the harvest season ends. Every piece of farm and factory equipment (yes—the Green Giant and the Trolleys included) will be subject to our rigorous inspection and preventive maintenance program to assure tip-top performance for next season. Each tea field will receive individual attention to make certain that the plants are in the best possible shape for their First Flush of 2009. A bit of news we are very proud about is that the three year old plants in field 14 will be pruned and shaped in anticipation of these plants contributing to the 2009 harvest. Our babies have grown up!

The off-season is a great time to visit Charleston Tea Plantation along with downtown, historic Charleston. At the Plantation, the fields are still green, the heat and humidity are way down, walking around the grounds is a little more serene without all the farm activity and the Gift Shoppe has even more fantastic items than usual to help your Holiday shopping go quicker! The same unique and great tasting American Classic Tea is available for you to sample and purchase. The city of Charleston is a little less crowded but still has all its’ grandeur, history and fine food waiting for you.

Please enjoy the Holidays with a relaxing cup of American Classic Tea.

Waddy - Charleston Tea Plantation Mascot Hi! My name is Waddy and I am the Charleston Tea Plantation's mascot. I have a very special life. I get to watch my tea plants grow as I hop from bush to bush. From late Spring to early Fall - every 18 days - we harvest and make tea from the bushes' new little leaves. If you look very closely at my bushes we may see each other!

The Bigelow Tea Company is owned and managed by the Bigelow Family who approach the manufacture of Bigelow teas with the same enthusiasm Ruth Campbell Bigelow possessed more than 60 years ago.

The History of Tea:
Tea is consumed by more health-conscious people and in greater quantity than any beverage except water. Tea is made with tea leaves from the Camillia Sinensis plant which is an evergreen related to the camellia and indigenous to Assam India and also parts of China and Japan. The lanceolate tea leaves are dark green with cream-colored fragrant blossoms. Shop for Tea and Green Tea Online at Bigelowtea.com. The largest tea grower in the world is China. Tea requires a protected habitat in a warm climate with much rainfall in order to grow.
