William Barclay Hall
Mr Hall is an expert, third-generation tea taster and tea maker born in Winnipeg, Canada. He received his formal training
during a four year tea apprenticeship in London, England. The first two years—1966 and 1967—were with Brooke
Bond, LTD, at that time the world's largest tea packer. Mr. Hall spent 1968 and 1969 with VanRees, then and still today,
the largest tea trader in the world. During those four years Mr. Hall tasted upwards of 800 cups of tea a day. Following
the completion of his formal training in London, Mr. Hall was posted for 5 years in Buenos Aires, Argentina to open VanRees'
first office in South America to work with this newly emerging major world supplier of tea.
Mr. Hall then broadened his base of tea knowledge with years of experience in the US food industry as a buyer and consultant
of teas, spices and olives. More recently, he has been a very successful and respected international tea broker who has
traveled extensively throughout the tea growing regions of the world in search of the perfect cup of tea. Mr. Hall's broad
spectrum of tea knowledge carries from the field to the cup!
It was in 1987 that Mr. Hall realized his passion in life and acquired ownership of the Charleston Tea Plantation—America's
only tea garden—on Wadmalaw Island just south of Charleston, South Carolina. He has been associated with Charleston Tea
Plantation ever since. It was also in 1987 that he introduced American Classic Tea—the freshest tea in America—and
continues to oversee and approve the taste of every single batch of production.
In 2003, Bigelow Tea purchased the plantation. Mr. Hall with the Bigelow family have partnered together in a mission to build
Charleston Tea Plantation into a beautiful, informative and educational tourist destination. Today they have successfully built
Charleston Tea Plantation into a "must see" place for tea lovers and tourists alike who visit the area from around the world.
In overseeing the daily operations, he brings his forty years of experience in the world of tea to Charleston Tea Plantation
every day.
