A lot of work has taken place this winter at Charleston Tea Plantation in anticipation of the 2008 harvest. Farm and factory equipment have been overhauled and fine tuned for the seven month long growing season. Each of the drainage ditches have been cleaned and reshaped where needed to assure the Plantations’ tea plants receive just the right amount of rain water this spring. Our irrigation ponds have been cleared of excess vegetation and their storage capacity has been expanded to make certain we have more water available this summer to keep the plants producing fresh leaf for the only tea grown and produced in America—American Classic Tea.

This years’ First Flush Festival—to celebrate the arrival of our 2008 tea crop—will be held on Saturday May 17, 2008. Mark your calendar and come to Charleston Tea Plantation on Wadmalaw Island for a whole day of fun, games, food, some great live music and an opportunity to purchase your own supply of Charleston Tea Plantation’s 2008 First Flush Loose Tea. Last year’s Festival was a great day for all who attended and for the Charleston Tea Plantation Team!

Our First Flush Tea—produced only with tea leaves from the very first spring growth on the tea plants—has a taste all its own. The plants have stored up all their energy over the short winter months and the results are a truly unique tasting tea available only while the supply of First Flush lasts. We’ve turned down many offers to sell our First Flush to other businesses in order to keep the limited supply available for sale only through our Gift Shoppe. All those who attend the Festival on May 17th will find the 2008 American Classic First Flush Tea available to you at a special “event only” price.

Our “Tea Trolley” will be running throughout the day on May 17th—taking a very special route and providing a unique and informative “First Flush Tour”. Advance tickets for the Festival are available at www.etix.com and at our Gift Shoppe for a discounted price. Tickets will be for sale at the front entrance to Charleston Tea Plantation on May 17th.

Waddy - Charleston Tea Plantation Mascot Hi! My name is Waddy and I am the Charleston Tea Plantation's mascot. I have a very special life. I get to watch my tea plants grow as I hop from bush to bush. From late Spring to early Fall - every 18 days - we harvest and make tea from the bushes' new little leaves. If you look very closely at my bushes we may see each other!

The Bigelow Tea Company is owned and managed by the Bigelow Family who approach the manufacture of Bigelow teas with the same enthusiasm Ruth Campbell Bigelow possessed more than 60 years ago.

The History of Tea:
Tea is consumed by more health-conscious people and in greater quantity than any beverage except water. Tea is made with tea leaves from the Camillia Sinensis plant which is an evergreen related to the camellia and indigenous to Assam India and also parts of China and Japan. The lanceolate tea leaves are dark green with cream-colored fragrant blossoms. Tea flavor optimization is helped by volatile oils, its stimulating properties to caffeine and its astringency to the tannin content. The largest tea grower in the world is China. Tea requires a protected habitat in a warm climate with much rainfall in order to grow.
