On March 13, 2014, Ed Hill and I had the pleasure of attending the 4th Sustainability Round Table hosted by The Lighting Quotient in West Haven, CT.  The theme was "Building management systems and the Cradle to Cradle sustainable product certification".

The management of THE LIGHTING QUOTIENT believes that strong, sustainable long-term growth requires the pursuit of economic, social and environmental best practices and the open acknowledgment of the Company's activities. Their commitment to the sustainability movement factors into virtually every business decision they make.

Allison Schieffelin, Chairman and CEO (and Bigelow Tea Board Member) kicked the meeting off with a very informative overview including how light can be used to improve employee's emotional states to increase productivity and efficiency.  A few tips are:

·Employee offices should be away from the outer walls to allow more natural light in.

·Use matt wall paint and ceiling saw tooth lights to reflect the light more evenly from ceiling to floor.

Paul Ford VP of Design then spoke about the Cradle to Cradle certification process and how they submit their light fixtures to c2ccertified.org for a comprehensive and rigorous evaluation. This process requires the manufacture to think about how a product is designed, what it is made of, how it is made, and where it goes after use. Products are analyzed by assessors that have been accredited by the Institute. After review of this assessment, the Institute awards the product an overall score or level while encouraging continual improvement.

We finished the meeting with a very educational tour of their facility.  Thanks to Allie and the entire Lighting Quotient Team for sharing your time and home away from home with us!
