On August 15, I had the privilege of volunteering at the Back to School Expo sponsored by The Nehemiah Commission in Bridgeport. The Nehemiah Commission serves the children and families of Bridgeport primarily through their mentoring, afterschool and adolescent support group programs. On this day, the children were treated to lunch, face painting, haircuts, raffles and more. They also had access to over 50 community service organizations offering wellness, education and social activities information. The children needed to get the signatures of six providers before they could receive a free backpack filled with school supplies. One thousand backpacks were collected and distributed. I helped set up, serve, answer questions and provide a bit of crowd control at the face painting booth. It was a very well organized event and helped prepare area children for the new school year.
